Soccer is perhaps the most demanding of all sports.
In the modern game (at any level) soccer training and conditioning is essential.
Few sports are played on as large a playing field, lasting as long and without regular rest periods.
Players cover 8-12km during a match, consisting of 24% walking, 36% jogging, 20% coursing, 11% sprinting, 7% moving backwards and 2% moving whilst in possession of the ball (1).
Soccer players posses excellent endurance with VO2max reported to range between 55 and 70 ml/kg/min in elite performers (2,3). The game is played at an average intensity close to the lactate threshold - approximately 80-90% of maximum heart rate (4,5).
How important is the correct type of endurance training in soccer?
The greater a player's aerobic capacity, the more ground they cover during a typical game (5,6). Additionally, improved endurance also increases the number of sprints completed in a game (7). By improving the VO2max of youth soccer players by 11% over an 8 week period, a 20% increase in total distance covered during competitive match play was manifested, along with a 23% increase in involvements with the ball and a 100% increase in the number of sprints performed by each player (5).
What about other forms of conditioning?
Strength training now plays a major role in soccer. However, simply lifting weights with the traditional "3 sets of 10 repetitions" approach is not an efficient way to spend training time. Soccer requires a balance of explosive power and muscular endurance. Some players may benefit from increasing their lean mass but even they should focus on converting much of their strength into soccer-specific power.
Strength training for soccer also helps to correct muscle imbalances. Soccer players in particualr are prone to developing overly strong quadriceps in relation to their hamstrings and a well-formed strength plan can address this and prevent future injury (8).

How to Design a Battery of Physical Fitness Tests
What exactly is a battery of physical fitness tests and how do you design one?
It is simply a group of fitness tests that closely represents the various physiological demands of your sport or event.
Step one is to break down the sport (or it could be an assessment for the Armed Forces or Fire Service) into its different fitness components. For an event such as the 100m sprint or the marathon this is fairly straight forward. Games such as basketball, rugby and volleyball for example are a little more complex.
One of the more complex examples is soccer. It's an intricate blend of aerobic and anaerobic endurance, strength, power, speed and agility. The test battery should include physical fitness tests that measure each of these components. But its not enough to simply test for strength or endurance per se...
Each test must replicate the energy demands and the movement patterns within the sport. Keeping with the soccer example for a moment:
Walking 1 mile as quickly as possible (Rockport test) is less sport-specific than running in 20m bursts backwards and forwards (Multistage shuttle run).
Once the precise energy and movement demands of the sport are understood, the most appropriate physical fitness tests can be chosen. In fact the athlete or coach can even make their own test up so long as it meets the following criteria...




Test Quality


Whether standard physical fitness tests or self-made fitness tests are employed they should always conform to several quality standards:
Validity
This refers to the degree that a test measures what it's supposed to. This is usually straightforward - a distance run for example would not be a valid measure of explosive power. sometimes the distinction maybe a little less clear - does a particular sprint test measure ultra short-term power for example?
Reliability
This refers to the consistency or repeatability of a fitness test. If an individual does not change his or her athletic ability then a reliable test, repeated twice will show no difference. The only variable the test should measure is the one it is designed to.
Case in point: body fat scales use bioelectrical impedance analysis to determine a person's body fat percentage. They rely on the fact that different tissues within the body consist of differing amounts of water. If the test is not properly controlled the scales may show a change in body fat levels when in fact they have only measured a change in hydration levels. This can easily happen if a woman is tested at different times of the month for example, and if this is not controlled then the test is said to be unreliable.
Reliability is less straightforward to control compared to validity. an unreliable test may occur because:
  • Different examiners are used for retesting, who use a slightly different protocol.
  • The examiner uses poor technique failing to standardize the test and calibrate equipment.
  • External factors have not been controlled, such as environmental conditions, order of tests or using different equipment for example.
  • Internal factors have not been controlled, such as when the athlete last ate/drank, the time of day or month the tests are performed at, fatigue levels and so on.
    Use these important general guidelines as well, to standardize the testing procedure and ensure accuracy and reliability...
  • Always warm up thoroughly before performing physical fitness tests. Perform 5-10 minutes of light aerobic exercise followed by stretching to all the major muscle groups.
  • Complete short, explosive tests first. For example a standing vertical jump should be performed before a multistage shuttle run (see below for more details on test order).
  • Always keep the order of the fitness tests the same when retesting.
  • try to test at the same time of day and in similar environmental conditions.
  • Use the same equipment making sure it is properly calibrated before each testing session.
  • If an examiner is taking measurements, have the same person take the measurements each time. Needless to say they should be experienced in administering the tests.
  • Avoid eating within 3 hours of the test battery, and avoid smoking, coffee and alcohol on the day of the test.
  • Avoid training heavily the day before the physical fitness tests and do no training at all on the test day.





Sample Physical Fitness Tests

Here are some reliable physical fitness tests that measure strength, speed, power, endurance and flexibility. They require little or no equipment - or certainly equipment that is readily available to most people.
Strength Tests
1) One repetition max -- The standard strength test for all athletes.
2) Sit up test -- A good indication of core strength.
3) Press up test -- Used to test strength endurance.
Speed and Power Tests
1) 30m sprint -- A simple fitness test to measure power.
2) 30m sprint fatigue -- Excellent for multisprint sports such as basketball, soccer, hockey etc.
3) Illinois agility test -- Another great fitness test for multisprint sports.
4) Standing long jump -- A simple test to measure explosive, ultra-short term power
5) Standing Vertical jump -- The standard fitness test used to measure explosive power. Particularly relevant to basketball and volleyball.
6) Hexagon drill -- Excellent test to measure quickness, agility and balance.
Endurance Tests
1) Balke 15 minute run -- A fitness test to measure aerobic power (VO2max) indirectly.
2) Cooper 12 minute run -- As above
3) Multistage shuttle run -- Also used to estimate aerobic power but more appropriate for multisprint sports. Also effective for testing large groups at a time.
4) Rockport test -- A simple walking test for less active individuals.
Flexibility Tests
There are only a few reliable tests to measure flexibility. The best instrument is a goniometer (a very simple and cheap type of protractor). It can be used to measure the flexibility of most joints and the range of motion for dozens of movements.
1) Sit and reach test -- The standard flexibility test that measures lower back and hamstring flexibility.

Test Order


According to the NSCA (1) a battery of physical fitness test should occur in the following order:





1. Non-fatiguing tests (height/weight measurements, skinfolds, vertical and broad jumps)
2. Agility tests (T-test, Illinois test)
3. Maximal strength & power tests (1-RM, 3-RM)
4. Sprint tests (40yard sprint, sprint fatigue test)
5. Muscular endurance tests (12min run, shuttle test)




An Example Battery Of Physical Fitness Tests

Now that you have developed your battery of physical fitness tests, use it at the beginning of your training program (usually the start of pre-season training. Use precisely the same set of tests to measure yourself about 6 weeks later and note your progress. It's a good idea to test yourself just prior to the start of the competitive season and then a couple of times during the competitive season.

Soccer facts about the physical side

The physiological load imposed on Professional soccer players can be calculated through observing and analysing competitive match play. Players move in many different directions and at various speeds, hence this activity is known as intermittent exercise. The overall physical loads in professional football are great and vary with respect to the level of competition, playing position and responsibilities as well as environmental factors.

The total distance run by a player offers approximate information on the amount of energy expended and the overall severity of the exercise. On average, all outfield players are required to run between 9 and 13 kilometres. The goalkeeper runs the least around a maximum of 4-6 Km. Overall, professional midfielders run the most whilst strikers sprint the greatest distance. For example, a top centre-forward has been shown to sprint 900 m (> 21 km/h) and runs 1520m at high intensity (14-21 km/h). Indeed players sprint on average once every 90 seconds. Fig 1 below breaks down the total distance run (11.6 km) of a top level midfielder into the percentage of time spent in different running activities.


Even in professional soccer, players are only in possession of the ball for around 2 minutes of the game duration. Most efforts are off the ball; e.g. support runs, contesting possession etc. On average, players only have a short rest for about 3 seconds every two minutes showing the constant effort required over 90 minutes. We must not forget that top-level players also move in different directions such as backwards and sideways running. Studies have shown that Professionals spend 7% of their time moving backwards (e.g. centre-halves retreating to challenge for a long high pass) and that this type of movement actually requires more energy expenditure.

The area where top level football really stands out is the larger amount of high-intensity running undertaken by players. This may demonstrate a greater capacity to respond to the vital moments in football which often require the execution of explosive physical efforts. For example, analysis shows that an International midfielder had to make 18 one-on-one situations in 25 minutes. However, in top level football, some players are shown to run more in the first-half compared to the second, indicating that even professionals show a certain level of fatigue. For example, studies on English and Danish professional players have shown a marked decrease in distance run between the two halves. Apparently, the fitter the player the lesser the degree of fatigue shown. Midfielders in general have a greater aerobic fitness or VO2 Max and are least likely to demonstrate a reduction in distance run between the two halves.
Through measuring heart rate values during games, competitive top level match play requires an average oxygen uptake of 75% of VO2 Max which is comparable to that experienced during marathon running. Similarly, measuring blood lactate values are useful for indicating the severity of exercise. Extremely high levels up to 12 mmol-1 have been observed in top level play and progressively higher lactate concentrations from the fourth to the top division in Swedish professional football demonstrate the greater high-intensity nature of the game especially at the top level. Body temperature offers clues on exercise intensity and energy production. Again, similar observations were made on Swedish professional football and the players from top division had the highest post-match temperatures which can again be linked to a greater overall exercise intensity.
Nutrition is another important factor involved in professional match play. For example, players are shown to lose between 1-3.5 kg of their body weight during games mostly through sweating, depending upon the weather conditions. Thus, correct drinking policies need to be undertaken to prevent reduced performance capacity as well as heat injury. In hot weather conditions for example, players carry out less high-intensity movements. Likewise, general correct eating habits are necessary to maintain performance and are unfortunately even neglected in Professional football ! Not only do top level players simply have to run, they are constantly tackling, passing, dribbling, heading and shooting to name but a few. For example, professional central defenders show the greatest frequency of jumps per game (around 20) and these factors when added to the various sprints and distances run demonstrate the high physical loads placed on top-level players. In the 1992 European Championships, the average number of passes per player in a game was 35 whilst the number of interceptions was 15. The average number of headers and tackles was 8 and 11 respectively. In general, match analysis has shown that a player touches the ball on average 60-120 times & for 2 seconds per match. Fitness level for game

So after a 2 week heel injury which im still recovering from, today i was finally able to get back on my feet and start running again. It sucks that heel injuries take time to heal back to 100% because were constantly walking but now that the pain has mostly gone away today i was able to start running again and it felt great i decided to run on the tredmill today just so i didnt have to worry about hurting my heel again on a rock or whatever. I ran a 5 mile program which i honestly didnt think i would last because after 2 weeks of no running i thought i was over shooting it a lil bit but here are my results


i know its not where i should be but after a couple more sessions i know i will be back in form
so my question for the readers are , do you have any tips to strengthen stamina and endurance??

AC MILAN vs BARCELONA!!

whos ready for a great rival match today for the champions league quaterfinal??? its going to be a close match i think but if Milan give Barca too put possesion they might give the game away. To me Milan has more of a vetern team with alot of class and smarts but, as we all know Barca just has a bench full of players and a starting 11 that can do alot of damage if given the opportunity. What im really excited about is watching some of my favorite players like Zlatan and Messi they both create and finish so well and i think they will play a big role in the teams today.

AC Milan's chances of dethroning the Champions League holder were dealt a major blow as center back Thiago Silva, who scored during a 2-2 draw between the two sides earlier this season, limped out of the Rossoneri's weekend clash with Roma.

He has been ruled out for both legs of this quarterfinal, meaning coach Massimiliano Allegri will reshuffle the defense by welcoming back veteran Alessandro Nesta. Daniele Bonera will slot in at right back in place of the injured Ignazio Abate.

Another key absence is the suspended midfield enforcer Mark Van Bommel, but Kevin-Prince Boateng and playmaker Clarence Seedorf are once again available and both could start, though Alberto Aquilani and Urby Emanuelson are also possibilities in the center of the pitch.

Ibrahimovic, who tops the Serie A scoring charts with 22 goals, will lead the line against his former side. Robinho has recovered from an ankle problem and is likely to start alongside the former Inter star ahead of Maxi Lopez and Stephan El Shaarawy. Alexandre Pato has gone to the USA for treatment on his persistent muscle injuries and will not feature on Wednesday.

Barcelona has a few worries of its own as defender Eric Abidal is scheduled for a liver transplant and another left back option, Adriano, is suffering from a thigh strain.

Therefore, Carles Puyol is likely to be moved to left back with Javier Mascherano partnering Gerard Pique at center back. Coach Pep Guardiola could opt for a 3-4-3 system which he used against AC Milan earlier in the campaign.

Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay has been included in the matchday squad to continue his training, but will not take part in the actual fixture, following his recovery from knee ligament damage. Spain international striker David Villa remains a long term casualty.

Which players will partner Lionel Messi upfront remains a mystery, but the two front-runners appear to be Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez with Pedro also in contention for a place in the starting XI.

Spoke too soon!!!

Chelsea takes the lead after a horrible chip which was lucky enough to reach kalou in the middle unmarked to finish it one touch .

Oh what a handful of chances both teams have had in this game and no one has capitalized yet! Benfica with the most clear chances were not able to finish their chances in front of the net. This game is still up in the air but im going to stick with my Benfica guess

looks like its almost game time for Benfica vs Chelsea and it seems like theres alot of different sides to this match and i like it! Chelsea hasnt really been soo consistant in previous games and others speculate that the starting 11 might be a lil worn out with their schedule and there are rumors that they are asking to push back an FA cup game..... As for Benfica they have on a good run as of recent and might just surprise Chelsea in this game.... What do you guys think the out come will be?????? i say 2-1 Benfica

So how about that ugly game ???? i expected a better game but it just lacked alot of creativity and willingness to win from both sides. Man U top player Rooney seemed to be on another pitch until he scored his winning goal to take the lead on Fulham ideno what was goin on with the team with alot of bad passes and just no midfield to create opportunities having to depend on the outside defenders like Rafael and Evra with some help from one of my favorites Valencia to make some crosses and come up and make some chances which lead to a goal. On the Fulham side, the team started off really slow with a couple of chances showing a little bit of life from Dempsey but it just wasnt good enough to get in the back of the net. NOW lets talk about the missed penalty call that the ref just didnt have the vision to see OR was it that he knows whats at stake on a game like that?? After the missed call you could clearly hear the analyst on ESPN talk about how CLEAR the penalty was and how the ref made a mistake to not call it and after a series of replays we could all see how the call should of been a penalty. But what really got to me was the other statement that the analyst said which was that IF the ref would of called it and Man U would of ended up with a tie or loss how bad the ref would of been bashed and made a fool out of in the english tabloids and newspapers! REALLY?? so after hearing that i  really just got angry that a ref in a game would have to think about all of that before making a big call. Referees should not have to feel pressured to make or not make calls on game reguarless of the teams. I understand the pressure they already have to hold for being a ref but dont let other parties like the newspapers have an affect on you.

weekend re-cap!!!

Another great weekend of futbol/soccer!!! i personally love hearing about the Uruguayans and all the goals they score to help there club teams succed. Martin Caceres scored agaginst Inter for Juventus , Cavani with another goal against Catania, Defender Sebastian Coates with a goal against QPR, the list goes on. With Uruguay being soo small and producing some of the top players in the best leagues, it really honers me to be uruguayan and to play soccer..i hope to reach the level of some of my fellow uruguayans and succeed as much as they did. Playing Pro in the U.S

Playing professional or semi-professional football is a lifetime career only for a top few. Even if a club signs you, it doesn't mean that you are set for life. It can, however, provide you with additional opportunities and contacts which could help you stay involved in the game as a coach, manager and so on. But always remember that playing football is a short-term job for 99% of all professionals.
Professional teams in the USA
In the United States, there are three professional soccer divisions. The MLS is on top. It is comprised of college draftees from around the US, South and Central Americans brought over with cheap contracts, and aging former stars trying to earn extra bucks. Most youngsters in the MLS get about $30-50,000 per year ($24,000 is the minimum.) The top guns in MLS get twice that sum in a single month. That is still a fraction of what a player gets in a good European league. The best way to get into the MLS is by making yourself noticed at the collegiate level or in lower division like the USL or PDL. Otherwise, it's very difficult to get tryouts with a team form the MLS, unless you have an impressive resume. MLS teams rarely hold open tryouts. Even if they do, it is usually very hard to get noticed, because of the large quantities of applicants. The NY MetroStars had nearly 1000 players show up in February of 2003. Out of them, they selected only two and both of them were sent to the team's reserve squad.

The USL 1 (formerly A-League) is considered one level below the MLS. Teams from both Canada and the US participate in it. They are separated into two conferences (Eastern and Western) with about six teams in each. The USL is played from late spring to early fall so that college players can participate without abandoning their study. The USL league is a major source of players for the MLS. It is a gathering place for promising youngsters and for retiring MLS stars. This league pays around $1000-3000 per month for six months of the year. Many USL teams hold open tryouts. Notice that they are usually held at the end or beginning of the year. Call your local team or search the net to find out about upcoming tryouts.

The USL 2 league (formerly PSL or D3 Pro) is one level below the USL 1. It consts of nine teams, separated into two conferences.
The PDL League is for players 23 or younger. It is an amateur league for "professional development." Teams from the higher divisions, or the MLS regularly draft players from the PDL. The PDL League accepts players for tryouts with little restrictions. If you have ability, they will pretty much be interested in you.

The USL 1, USL 2 and the PDL are united in a single organization called USL (United Soccer Leagues.) College divisions are the other major source of manpower for the MLS and the professional USL leagues. College players are the ideal target for pro teams, because they can be signed for free and have a lot of years ahead of them. The MLS SuperDraft is the system of brining up players from college and the USL leagues into the MLS.

so basically ive been online all day because currently im unemployed. And i have been online looking for ways to generate money online and at my conclusion ive realized that this just isnt possible without actually investing some amount of money. But im not angry at that but know i know what i have to do to make some money and ive learned a large amount of information from going threw the process of all these scams and fake websites that offer money on the spot. one thing i realized from all the websites is they all ask for your email address and basic info. But know i know that for every idiot like me that actually fills that stuff out they get paid for it ... even for all the clicks you do on the pages. i really tip my hat off to those people even though they got me fallen for it. but i guess now i just have to continue with my plan to build my own website ,,,, so stayed tuned friends for my website COMMING SOON!!!

Manchester City!

i know all of you watched the tight incredible match of Manchester city vs Chelsea . After months with out being on the starting eleven , and as a matter of fact not even on the bench. Carlos Tevez makes his comeback with an impressive assist to Nasri to score in the final minutes to take the lead from Chelsea and take home the win. I personally always liked Tevez for his big heart and hard effort on the pitch and not to mention his great goals which the year before took him to the top of the scoring table. But now after this performance i wonder what the fans and followers think about Carlos back on the team and do you think he will earn his starting spot back ?

Tryouts

As of 2012 i have been attending professional soccer tryouts in the united states and as of now i attended ....1 soccer combine in sarasota , and 2 NASL tryouts for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Atlanta Silverbacks. The combine i attended in sarasota ended up good for me getting good reviews from my coach and some other feed back from other coaches. Unfortunately i didnt have an agent with me talking to all the coaches so all i could do was just play good and hope a coach would notice me from afar. As for the 2 NASL tryouts i feel like i didnt play as good as i could of in the Strikers one because i was noted down in the wrong position and didnt play my position till the second game which hurt my chances a lil but im not going to make excuses. one thing that did seem to bother me was the organization of the tryout....it was a lil out of order and it made me feel like it was just a method to get 175$ out of me. I mean they do have about 2 or 3 tryouts charging aspiring players that amount. The profit is just insane, originally from Uruguay i know that in South America the system is nothing like that over there. If your good then you go to a team and meet with the manager and they offer you a 2 week trial with the reserves or the team and if your something they might be intrested in then you get offered a contract. Over here in the U.S. you have to pay to play and you get one or two days of tryouts with random players that are also trying out and its just a scattered mess of players that are on differnt levels of skill which makes it very hard to get noticed or even play decent. Next tryout was with the Atlanta Silverbacks in Georgia. I spoke to a friend of mine who knew an insider that could possibly get me an invite without paying the application fee. After recieving the invite i booked my flight and was on my way. I arrived in Atlanta excited to play and once again it was a mess of players on diffent skill levels. This tryout though was more organized and they made us run some drills and do some passing, but after seeing that alot of the players were not able to do the drills correct they decided to cut it down and just start with the scrimmages. After that it got better and players started showing better skill but in some cases you were stuck with a player that couldnt pass well or couldnt keep up with the level and it just makes you look bad at times. But i felt like i did extreamly well and left pretty happy with my performance. So after some time and waiting for responses from the staff of the tryouts i was hoping to hear something positive but all i got were NO`s NO`s NO`s. Im going to keep training and im looking to find some trials out of the country were i believe i have a better chance at success in soccer. In the US its more about size and power and not the fundamentals and tactical side. I hope that soccer continues to grow in the US and i hope kids have better better opportunities in the future
